In the apartment, Beth sits huddled in an armchair that feels far too big for her, clasps her hands tightly in her lap and tries to stop shivering.
"I know them," she says, her voice hollow.
"I know them," she says, her voice hollow.

Date: 2009-05-06 06:11 pm (UTC)"I had a feeling." Laying his hand on top of hers, Lorne sits down on the dark mahogany coffee table. It's a tad too small for him not to look like he's dwarfing it, but it'll do. It's just perfect for some casual, informal winding down time.
"Who are they? If you don't mind telling me, I'd like to know."

Date: 2009-05-06 06:12 pm (UTC)Too exhausted to really feel the fear.
"They found me."

Date: 2009-05-06 06:13 pm (UTC)He called Angus on his way out the door, telling him he might need some doorways opened before long. They'll have a look at Emma's options in the morning, but for the moment they're safe. She's safe. He can be content with that, for now.

no subject
Date: 2009-05-06 06:38 pm (UTC)He shrugs, not really knowing the answer. There isn't a good one, and he doesn't feel like making something up just for the sake of sugar coating it. "You called me."
And that suddenly rings truer than anything else he might've said. She called him.

Date: 2009-05-06 07:23 pm (UTC)"...I just wanted someone to know what happened," she whispers, and her throat contracts suddenly as with the threat of tears.

Date: 2009-05-06 07:45 pm (UTC)Lorne opts for the second approach. "As if I was just gonna let you go willy nilly into the night, chased by a bunch of crazies. I'm not smart enough."
They both know the safest thing for him would have been to just stay away. It would also have been the intelligent thing to do, but intelligence barely entered into his panicked equations tonight.

Date: 2009-05-06 07:47 pm (UTC)"I thought I could hide." Her shoulders hunch over. "I thought I could hide until they gave up, and then call you back and ... I don't know."
She lowers her head to take a sip of the tea.
"But they kept finding me. I don't know how."

But if they could find her before, what's to say they can't find her here as well?
"...how good were they at tracking you, exactly?"

Date: 2009-05-06 07:56 pm (UTC)A pause, and the change in his tone of voice registers, and she raises her head to stare at him with dawning horror.

Date: 2009-05-06 08:00 pm (UTC)It's all she has time to say before the she's interrupted.
By the splintering crash of the apartment's heavy front door being kicked off its hinges.

Date: 2009-05-06 08:01 pm (UTC)Despite the spacious apartment filled with big, kitschy pieces of furniture, there's really not that many places to run and hide. There's the bathroom on one end of the place, and the gigantic master bedroom that no one ever uses on the other end. Both can be locked up tight, but Emma'd better move fast.
"Go!"
There isn't time enough for him to reach for his gun - and even if there were, he doesn't want to. He doesn't want to fight.

Date: 2009-05-06 08:03 pm (UTC)The Council Slayers are emerging from the entryway as she stops just inside the bedroom and turns to look over her shoulder, realizing only then that Lorne isn't following her.

Date: 2009-05-06 08:10 pm (UTC)"I'm going to ask you real nice to stand aside, sir. Our business here isn't with you."

Date: 2009-05-06 08:18 pm (UTC)Weapons, weapons, keep your metaphorical eye on the weapons, keep the leader focused on you, don't let her look away-- His eyes narrow, his lips press together for the space of a heartbeat - and he moves, one step, two, three, placing himself between the Slayers and the bedroom door, pushing it shut. "Emma, sweetie, do me a favor and lock up tight?"

Date: 2009-05-06 08:22 pm (UTC)The one with the bat snorts. "'Emma', huh? She was calling herself 'Beth' back at the Academy."
The three are moving further into the room, spreading out, forming a loose triangle. It's getting harder to watch all of them at once.

Date: 2009-05-06 08:23 pm (UTC)"It could've been any one of you, you know. Any one of you. Ever think of that?"
He's talking a chance, a gamble, a shot in the dark, but it's his only weapon right now. He thinks he has an idea why they're here, and he'll milk this chance until it runs dry.
It's with a sense of dawning dread that he realizes something. He's taking a stand.

Date: 2009-05-06 08:29 pm (UTC)"Jordie," says the girl with the bat, very low; it's a warning.

Date: 2009-05-06 08:36 pm (UTC)"Do I look like I'm talking about the dearly departed? You think you know so much about right and wrong, it doesn't even occur to you you could've been in Emma's shoes. You're grieving, so you want more bloodshed? What kind of animals are you people?!"

Date: 2009-05-06 08:39 pm (UTC)"Do you even know what she did?"

no subject
Date: 2009-05-06 08:52 pm (UTC)Shaking his head. "You don't know anything. None of you do, you're just a bunch of ugly-hearted nobodies out for blood and vengeance."
