Windows above a certain floor level in Manhattan aren't supposed to open wide enough to admit a human being through, for safety reasons. Unless they open onto a fire escape, which this one doesn't -- the fire escape is some yards away, accessible through a different room.
All that means is that somebody's going to have to get the glass replaced tomorrow.
